"Conductor Axel Kober is the most important discovery for Viennese Wagnarians.
Thanks to his obvious capellmeister competence, he gets the orchestra to dare risky dramaturgical maneuvers, and wins across the board."
14.01.2019 – Die Presse - Wilhelm Sinkovicz on "Die Walküre"

"The music unfolds in a broad, always controlled stream, which is given a lot of air to breathe by Kober. And this is of benefit, in particular to the supernaturally beautiful Adagio, which is virtually clothed in velvet and silk by the Duisburg musicians."
15.02.2019 – WAZ – Pedro Obiera on Bruckner‘s 7th Symphony with Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra

Axel Kober’s interpretations of a wide opera and concert repertoire grow on the basis of profound knowledge, enormous experience and a comprehensive musical sense into spheres of inspiring emotionality.

After studying conducting in Würzburg, first engagements took him to Schwerin and Dortmund, before he became deputy, later acting GMD in Mannheim and – next to Riccardo Chailly – music director of Oper Leipzig, where he also regularly conducted concerts of the Gewandhausorchester.

Since the 2009/10 season, Axel Kober has been Music Director of Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg, where he sets a distinctive course in a wide repertoire – from Rameau via Mozart, Rossini, Bizet, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, Lehár, Strauss, Britten, Poulenc and Oehring up to the world premiere of Jörg Widmann’s "Gesicht im Spiegel". Recent highlights include new productions of a whole "Ring des Nibelungen" as well as of "Wozzeck" with stage director Stefan Herheim, Bo Skovhus and Camilla Nylund. In addition, there is a close relationship to "Ballett am Rhein", a.o. with Brahms’ "Ein Deutsches Requiem", Mahler’s 7th Symphony and Rossini’s "Petite messe solenelle", all choreographed by Martin Schläpfer.

In summer 2013, Axel Kober gave his acclaimed debut at the Bayreuth Festival, where he conducted "Tannhäuser" and was immediately re-invited for summer 2014 and then for "Der Fliegende Holländer" from 2015 onwards.

In 2016/17, Axel Kober debuted at Vienna’s State Opera, where he received enthousiastic feedback for his complete "Ring"-cycle in 2019 by audience and press alike. After "Hänsel und Gretel" and "Arabella", he will return to Vienna for "Der Freischütz" in 2020.

Additional recent invitations lead him to Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Opéra National du Rhin Strasbourg, Semperoper Dresden, and Oper Zurich, as well as to concerts of Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, Slovenian Philharmonic and Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

In autumn 2017, Axel Kober assumed the position of Chief Conductor of the Duisburger Philharmoniker, from autumn 2019, he also holds the position of GMD.

Additional future projects include a new production of "Falstaff" at State Opera Hamburg, as well as his returns Bayreuther Festspiele and to Vienna's State Opera and Opera Zurich.
